Recently, Wärtsilä has received a contract for power and navigation control solutions for three newly constructed cruise ships of Virgin Voyages, a travel company of the Virgin Group. 
Three cruise ships can carry 2,800 visitors, built by the Italian Fincantiny shipyard. The contract for the Fin Catherine shipyard to order the Wärtsilä engine, the mixed exhaust gas scrubber system and the selective catalytic reduction (SCR) system was signed in 2016, and in March 2017 the Wärtsilä integrated navigation system was ordered. Wärtsilä will supply two 8-cylinder and two 12-cylinder Wärtsilä 46F engines to each cruise ship.
The Wärtsilä mixed exhaust gas scrubber system selected for these cruise ships utilizes seawater to remove sulfur oxides (SOx) from the exhaust gases both in the open loop and in the closed loop mode. The Wärtsilä Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) system will enable significant reductions in nitrogen oxides and particulate emissions. Wärtsilä will also work with the shipyard to undertake engine and scrubber system commissioning tasks.
The navigation and automation systems for these cruise ships are operated by Wärtsilä's Nacos Platinum solution. By integrating various control and monitoring systems, such as navigation, automation, emergency shutdown, flood detection, plus power and propulsion, these cruise ships can operate in different locations on board.
The first of the three cruise ships will be delivered in 2020. The remaining two ships will be delivered in 2021 and 2022. The three cruise ships of the Virgin Voyages, based in Florida, will be officially launched in 2020 from Miami.
