Mitsubishi Motors and LG Chem Collaborate to Develop Electric Car Battery

Mitsubishi Motors Japan and South Korea's LG Chemicals announced at the end of September 2010 that they will jointly develop advanced lithium-ion battery systems for electric vehicles.

LG Chemicals will first supply lithium-ion batteries for electric prototype cars. The two companies will develop battery systems that will add power control facilities. It will be mass-produced at Mitsubishi Motors' Nagoya plant.

The two companies will work together to improve the performance and safety of new battery systems.

GS Yuasa Corporation, Mitsubishi Corporation (MC) and Mitsubishi Motors Corporation (MMC) have formed a joint venture Lithium Battery Japan (Lithium Energy Japan) in 2007 to manufacture high-capacity and high-performance lithium-ion batteries for i-MiEV electric vehicles.
