A few days ago, the Ministry of Environmental Protection stated that it will fully implement the total control of nitrogen oxides in motor vehicles, strengthen environmental supervision in the entire process of motor vehicle production, use, and elimination, and increase efforts to prevent and control motor vehicle exhaust pollution. The haze that has ravaged the Beijing-Tianjin region for many days and gradually spread throughout the country has seriously affected the health of the public.

For three consecutive years, China has become the world’s largest producer and seller of motor vehicles. Motor vehicle pollution has become an important source of air pollution, and is an important cause of haze and photochemical smog pollution. Monitoring shows that the urban air in China has begun to show the characteristics of combined pollution of soot and motor vehicle exhaust, which directly affects the health of the people. In 2011, the country’s motor vehicle emissions were 46.079 million tons, 3.5% more than in 2010, including 6.375 million tons of nitrogen oxides (NOx), 621,000 tons of particulate matter, 4.412 million tons of hydrocarbons (HC), and carbon monoxide (CO). 34.671 million tons.

Automobiles are the main contributors to the total amount of pollutants, with NOx and PM emissions exceeding 90% and HC and CO exceeding 70%. Classified by models, NOx and PM emissions from trucks across the country are significantly higher than passenger cars, while passenger cars have higher CO and HC emissions than trucks. According to the classification of environmental protection marks, the "yellow label vehicle", which only accounts for 16.4% of the vehicle ownership, has discharged 63.7% of NOx, 86.6% of PM, 55.9% of CO, and 60.4% of HC.
